Get Your Digital Heart Pumping: Tech for Welsh Businesses

Across Wales, businesses are becoming more technologically and digitally advanced.

Cardiff University recently released its digital maturity survey, which has existed for 3 years. Here’s a brief explanation of what the survey sets out to achieve:

“The Digital Maturity Survey for Wales provides evidence from a representative sample of SMEs in Wales, based on 479 responses. Its findings provide an insight into the processes by which SMEs’ business performance is shaped by the adoption of broadband and the resulting impacts.”

The survey goes into detail about broadband variations Welsh businesses have, what cloud computing options they have chosen, and what impact it’s had on their turnover and profits. The survey mainly investigates which businesses have upgraded and subsequently taken advantage of the superfast broadband scheme.

The results are encouraging, but more businesses need to digitally enhance themselves to reap the benefits for future customers.

What technology should your business be embracing?

The most surprising takeaway from the survey was that many SMEs were ‘digitally disengaged’. This means some companies are running on standard broadband, with employees having a below-average ICT skillset. It also implies that their businesses do not engage with digital technologies and report no online sales or activity.

We’ve put together a few starting points to get you thinking about what services could enhance your business:

Online payments

Being able to accept and distribute online payments should be a standard process you can offer your clients. It’s an easy decision to make. Deciding what service is right for your business is a difficult one.

Services like Paypal, Shopify and WorldPay are ideal options for SMEs looking to get started with online transactions.

From here, you can easily link them to your business accounts to keep all your financial handling in one place. Heaps of integration opportunities with account management software like Xero, Quickbooks and Sage also exist.

Also, allowing you to have bespoke software development created to help streamline your process.

Communication with your team

Long gone are the days of not being able to communicate overseas and to distant countries. We are in the age of universal, around-the-clock communication. The only downside is that there are many different options to choose from.

VoIP is one of the best services to explore. VoIP communicates voice, data or video content over IP (Internet Protocol) networks. In simple terms, VoIP is broadband for telephony and other services. A higher quality of calls, more cost-effectiveness, and the ability to scale up or down.

It makes sense to implement a better phone service for your business. This allows you to reach your team whenever the situation arises. It also gives your team no problem reaching existing and potential clients.

Efficiency and Streamlining Processes

Of course, stock control can be a major issue depending on what line of what you are in. Especially for SMEs quickly gaining momentum and taking on the extra workload.

That’s why embracing new technology to help these issues makes so much sense.

We don’t just advise which software or hardware fits your business. We take time to teach and maintain your understanding of the additions to the new work environment.

Cybersecurity – protection and awareness

Finally, Cyber Security is probably the most effective enhancement you can bring to your business. More and more cyber attacks are hitting businesses daily, and without proper protection, more and more data is being lost.

What can you do to protect yourself digitally?

Train your staff. It’s becoming increasingly vital that users know what a fake email looks like. As well as knowing how to spot a phishing attack, you should empower your employees to protect themselves while using the internet.

Get Cyber Essentials certified. Using an auditor like ourselves, Cyber Essentials guides businesses through examinations and tests to ensure they know how to protect themselves properly. Cyber Essentials helps you to guard against the most common cyber threats and demonstrate your commitment to cybersecurity.
