Get your digital heart pumping – New technology for businesses

Across Wales, businesses are becoming more technologically and digitally advanced.

Cardiff University recently released their digital maturity survey, which has now been in existence for 3 years. Here’s a brief explanation of what the survey sets out to achieve:

“The Digital Maturity Survey for Wales provides evidence from a representative sample of SMEs in Wales, based on 479 responses. Its findings provide an insight into the processes by which SMEs’ business performance is shaped by the adoption of broadband and the resulting impacts.”

The survey goes in detail about broadband variations welsh businesses have, what cloud computing options they have chosen, and what impact it’s had on their turnover and profits. Mainly though, the survey investigates which businesses have upgraded and subsequently taken advantage of the superfast broadband scheme.

The results are encouraging, but more businesses need to digitally enhance themselves to reap the benefits for future customers.

What technology should your business be embracing?

The most surprising takeaway from the survey was that many SME’s were ‘digitally disengaged’. Meaning there were companies that are running on standard broadband, with employees having a below average ICT skillset. Also implying that their businesses do not engage with digital technologies and report no online sales or activity.

We’ve put together a few starting points to get your thinking about what services could enhance your business:

Online payments

Did you know that 74% of SMEs reported sales made online’

Being able to accept and distribute online payments should be a standard process you can offer your clients. It’s an easy decision to make. Deciding what service is right for your business, is the difficult one.

Services like Paypal, Shopify and WorldPay are ideal options for SME’s looking to get started with online transactions.

From here, you can easily link them up to your business accounts to keep all your financial handling in one place. There are also heaps of integration opportunities with account management software like Xero, Quickbooks and Sage. Also giving you the opportunity of having bespoke software development being created to help streamline your process.

Communication with your team

Long gone are the days of not being able to communicate overseas and to distant countries. We are in the age of universal, around the clock communication. The only downside means that there is a lot of different options to choose from.

VoIP is one of the best services to explore. VoIP is the communication of voice, data or video content over IP (Internet Protocol) networks. In simple terms, VoIP is the use of broadband for telephony and other services. A higher quality of calls, more cost effective and the ability to scale up or down.

It makes sense to implement a better phone service for your business. This gives you the opportunity to always reach your team whatever the situation. As well as giving your team no problem with reaching existing and potential clients.

Efficiency and Streamlining Processes

Of course, depending on what line of what you are in, stock control can be a major issue. Especially for SME’s that are quickly gaining momentum and taking on the extra workload.

That’s why embracing new technology to help these issues make so much sense.

We don’t just provide advice on which software or hardware fits your business. We take time in teaching and maintaining your understanding of the new additions to your working environment.

Cybersecurity – protection and awareness

Finally, Cyber Security is probably the most effective enhancement you can bring to your business. More and more cyber attacks are hitting businesses every day and without proper protection, more and more data is being lost.

What can you do to protect yourself digitally?

Train your staff. It’s becoming more and more vital that users know what a fake email looks like. As well as knowing how to spot a phishing attack, you should empower your employees on how to protect themselves whilst using the internet.

Get Cyber Essentials certified. Using an auditor like ourselves, Cyber Essentials guides a business through a series of examinations and tests to ensure they know how to protect themselves properly. Cyber Essentials helps you to guard against the most common cyber threats and demonstrate your commitment to cybersecurity.
