Machines and hardware fail

Although we don’t like to admit it (especially as an IT service company) computer equipment does have a shelf life. Machines and hardware do have the tendency to fail, and sometimes it is hard to predict or prevent when it happens.

The most common problems are hard disk errors, potentially erasing or losing work that has been created on the day of failure. It’s a perfect example of how having a disaster recovery plan in place could keep you protected.

Knowing that if a machine decides to corrupt and put your work in danger, having your work being constantly backed up could save you.

Humans make mistakes

That’s right, humans make mistakes. It is hard to believe it, but it’s true.

Because of this, simple errors do occur; saving over a word document, accidentally deleting files, or even changing a password by mistake. This is even more reason to have a disaster plan in place. Especially when backing up solutions work hand in hand when forming a disaster recovery system.

Some backing up solutions can even restore to a specific date and time, incredibly useful if a certain action has caused catastrophic damage.

The customer is king. It’s a phrase and mantra that many organisations live by.

Therefore, keeping a customer in limbo when a website is down, or a service is inactive, is not a good situation to be in. Having a reactive disaster solution to this, could keep a client from leaving you.

It’s healthy to evaluate processes in your business, one of them should be about the data and information you access day to day.

Disaster recovery can serve a purpose to continuously back up and keep versions of files. Or it can serve the purpose of retrieving deleted and lost files.

Without a data backup or disaster recovery plan, you might not be able to get certain files back if they are lost – could you afford for that to happen?

Natural disasters

As much as preparing for technical and virtual disasters, it is worth considering how natural disasters could affect your organisation.

A common example is losing power or internet connection during a storm overnight. Having a disaster plan can allow you to quickly get systems back online. Letting you continue business whilst the external problem is addressed.
