Multiple users can edit and make changes to the same documents in real-time to allow collaboration from anywhere. Also, a history log of changes and edits can be found for each Microsoft supported document (from the Office Suite). Google Drive does provide a desktop version of their application. This standalone piece of software acts as a cloud backup and will synchronize with your PC’s folders.

 

Collaboration made easy

Sharing is the name of the game with Google Drive. Real-time editing also means collaboration is super easy and simple. The suite of G apps (docs, sheets, slides, etc) is all provided and usable for multiple users.

 

Simple interface

Due to its intuitive UI, Google Drive aces it when it comes to usability. Its efficient built-in search engine is a highlight, allowing users to search files by type and owner.

 

Accommodating for all

Google Drive is versatile in the fact that it can support a variety of Microsoft Office file types. For example, Word documents will open in Google Docs. Formatting is often lost but the majority of content is carried over and accessible.

OneDrive

 

Lack of third-party app integration

Currently, OneDrive for Business does not support third-party app integrations. Users cannot sync business accounts with non-Microsoft apps such as calendars, message boards, and project management platforms. There is also not cross-platform access with online Google Drive files – just downloaded files in support formats.

 

Desktop Synchronise Settings

As great as Desktop synchronization is, there can often be issues when users are editing files offline and don’t resync their content. OneDrive enables automatic synchronization, but it can be disabled by laptop battery or Desktop inactivity. For example, a spreadsheet of stock that hasn’t been updated could create multiple versions.

Collaboration limited to Gmail

Shareability and real-time editing don’t fare well if the recipient holds a non-Google account. The recipient needs access permission before he or she can view the content, and even then, no editing is permitted whatsoever. This can sometimes be problematic as request emails are often found in junk folders.

 

Google cannot protect your data

Google has best-in-class security against infrastructure threats like hardware and software failure, power outages, and natural disasters. However, it offers no data protection at your end from human error, illegitimate deletion, program/sync errors, malicious insiders, malware, and ransomware.

OneDrive pin verification

To increase security and combat phishing attempts, Microsoft is introducing verification codes added to documents shared with users outside of their OneDrive team. This means when a document is sent to an unrecognised users, they are asked to provide a one time unique code to confirm they are the correct recipient of this file. Read more here

Google Drive will begin to mention whether a user is currently out of the office, when they are tagged or mentioned on a collaborative document. Using the Gmail integration, users can see whether a task will be picked up or go unnoticed due to their current situation. Read more here

 

 

Conclusion

When it comes down to it, there isn’t a lot to choose between OneDrive and Google Drive. Both offer fantastic options when it comes to cloud storage. And most importantly, they both give a lot of storage for great prices.

 

However, the point difference is security. Microsoft is a pioneer when it comes to protection and One Drive is no different. The extra layers of authentication, verification, and general account safety give it the edge over Google.

 

OneDrive offers more powerful applications with peace of mind over your safety. Google offers great applications but is stripped down and limited. The same goes for their security offering, it’s good – but not as advanced as Microsoft.
